Rangipo Radial Sluice Gate Overhaul

The Scope

To deliver a complete overhaul of three radial sluice gates at the Rangipo Intake, encompassing gate leaf refurbishment, replacement of seals, bushes and bearings, and comprehensive blast and paint works to the gates and slots.

The project also included refurbishment of the hydraulic rams and associated steelwork, together with the design and installation of a new hydraulic system integrated with the customer-supplied hydraulic power unit (HPU).

A technically demanding project that drew on the full breadth of Hutec’s expertise across design, fabrication, refurbishment, hydraulic systems and installation.

Our Solution

The project required detailed, dynamic planning to achieve the first-ever removal and reinstallation of the gate arms and leaves. Hutec coordinated multiple specialist contractors and activities, including rigging, abseiling, crane operations and transport, to safely remove and transport each 20-tonne, 6-metre-wide gate for off-site overhaul - a 600 km round trip.

Hutec completed comprehensive as-found and as-left measurements throughout the project to verify existing designs, confirm installation requirements and document the final condition of the equipment. Functional testing was also undertaken to demonstrate the successful operation of the fully overhauled gates.

All works were delivered within a live power station environment located within a World Heritage Area, requiring careful planning, coordination and adherence to stringent safety, environmental and operational requirements.
