Auckland Stadium
The Scope
During the construction of a new stadium in Auckland, the client required a frameless glass balustrading solution that met new Council requirements while working within strict structural weight limitations.
The updated regulations required balustrading to be manufactured using laminated glass. However, the available 25 mm laminated glass options were too heavy for the stadium seating structure and its weight constraints.
The client engaged Hutec to develop a lightweight, compliant solution that could meet both the regulatory and structural requirements of the project.
Our Solution
When new Council regulations ruled out the use of toughened glass, the project was already underway. Hutec responded quickly, developing an alternative solution that met the new requirements while remaining within the stadium’s strict weight constraints.
Hutec arranged for more than 700 metres of glass to be sourced internationally and worked closely with specialist glass industry partners to develop the manufacturing process. The glass was laminated first and then polished, producing a smoother, more consistent finish before being rigorously tested to confirm compliance with the required standards.
The result was a 15 mm laminated glass solution that provided the required strength and safety while significantly reducing the weight compared with standard 25 mm options.
The project also called for a number of customised engineering solutions. At the client’s request, Hutec sourced oval stainless steel for the handrails and developed custom-machined elbows to achieve the desired finish. The team also engineered specialist brackets for the automated basketball hoops, tapered inserts for the netball hoops, and the stadium’s complete Stage 2 structural steelwork.
The finished installation delivered the combination of performance, safety and aesthetics the client was looking for, providing sleek, frameless glass balustrades while maintaining uninterrupted views of the action.
