Wheao Turbine and Main Inlet Valve Refurbishment

The Scope

The project involved the overhaul of the turbine wet-end components and Main Inlet Valve (MIV), including inspection, refurbishment and replacement of worn components affected by sediment, to support the turbine’s ongoing reliable operation.

Our Solution

Hutec completed a major refurbishment of the G2 generating unit at Wheao Hydroelectric Power Station.

The work combined specialist workshop refurbishment with on-site mechanical services, including dismantling, inspection, weld repairs, precision machining and protective coatings. Key activities included restoring the turbine runner and covers, overhauling the guide vane mechanisms, replacing seals and bushes, and refurbishing the main inlet valve. Reassembly, alignment and commissioning support brought these elements together for the unit’s return to service.

Drawing on our earlier condition assessment of the machines, Hutec brought practical knowledge of the station and its equipment to the refurbishment. Close coordination between our workshop teams, site crews and specialist partners supported delivery through each stage of the overhaul.

The project demonstrates Hutec’s capability to restore critical hydro assets through local engineering expertise, extending the service life of existing equipment and supporting New Zealand’s renewable energy infrastructure.
